THE REGION

The city of Aveiro is located in the center of Portugal near the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria de Aveiro. The Ria de Aveiro lagoon have a high biodiversity richness and an important cultural and natural heritage.

Aveiro, a canal town, is considered one of the most charming locations in the country. With this unique insight into old Aveiro, you can take a boat ride along the canals of Aveiro in the traditional Moliceiro boat. You can taste the famous and typical pastry Ovos Moles de Aveiro while you are watching the Art Nouveau buildings or strolling around the historic Beira Mar area. You can also take a ride on BUGA - Aveiro's free bicycle, use city buses, the tourist train or other organized tours.

This is a pleasant region to visit at any time of the year.

The diversity of gastronomy, the traditional pastries and the wines from the Bairrada Region are more reasons to know the most inspiring region of the Portuguese coast.

PLACES TO VISIT

Next to the Aveiro Cathedral you can find the Aveiro Museum – Santa Joana, located in the former Convent of Jesus belonging to the female branch of the Dominican Order. You can also take a stroll between the salt marines and visit the Troncalhada Marine Ecomuseum or enjoy the Aveiro walkways with privileged views of the Ria de Aveiro lagoon.

A short distance from Aveiro is the Costa Nova beach, famous for its colorful striped houses, the Barra beach, best known for its monumental lighthouse and São Jacinto Dunes, a Nature Reserve which wild beaches.

In the neighboring town of Ílhavo you can visit Maritime Museum of Ílhavo where it is possible to witness the connection of this region to the sea. Don’t miss the Codfish Aquarium to see several codfish species swimming around. You can also visit the Vista Alegre Historic Museum, recently expanded and refurbished which shows the history of the factory and exhibits porcelain collections.
